At Glow Jar Beauty, we believe education builds confidence.
If you’ve noticed that some of our labels now include a few extra ingredients, don’t worry, our formulas haven’t changed. What has changed is Health Canada’s fragrance-allergen labelling requirement, which is designed to give consumers more information about the products they use....(we love that!)
What’s changing?
For many years, fragrance ingredients could simply be listed as Parfum (Fragrance).
Under Health Canada’s updated cosmetic labelling requirements, brands may still use Parfum (Fragrance) to identify the fragrance mixture. However, certain fragrance allergens must now also be listed individually when they are present above specific concentrations. This means labels may now show a few additional ingredients even when the formula itself has not changed.
Health Canada’s fragrance-allergen labelling changes are being rolled out in phases. The first stage began in April 2026, and the rules expand further in August 2026 for new products, with a later deadline for existing products.
Disclosure thresholds
-
Leave-on products: greater than 0.001%.
-
Rinse-off products: greater than 0.01%.
This applies whether those fragrance allergens come from:
-
a fragrance blend,
-
an essential oil,
-
a botanical extract.
The purpose of these changes is simple: to improve ingredient transparency and help consumers with known fragrance allergies or sensitivities make informed purchasing decisions.
What does this mean for Glow Jar Beauty?
Our skincare products continue to be formulated without added fragrance, essential oils, dyes, phthalates, or silicones.
The only two products in our collection that intentionally contain added fragrance are our:
-
Pineapple Body Oil
-
French Vanilla Body Oil
These products have always been formulated with a phthalate-free fragrance, and their formulas have not changed.
The only difference is that Health Canada’s updated regulations now require us to list certain fragrance allergens separately on the label when they are present above the disclosure threshold.
For customers with known fragrance allergies, skin sensitivities, or specific ingredient preferences, this makes it much easier to identify products that are right for them.
Why do we choose phthalate-free fragrances?
Phthalates are a family of ingredients that have historically been used in some fragrance formulations to help scents last longer.
At Glow Jar Beauty, we’ve always chosen phthalate-free fragrances for our body oils, as this reflects one of the formulation standards we’ve chosen because it aligns with the type of products we want to create.
What changed on the label?
Previously, our ingredient list read:
Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Oenothera Biennis (Evening Primrose) Oil, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Parfum (Fragrance), Tocopherol.
Under the updated labelling requirements, the ingredient list now includes certain fragrance allergens individually when they are present above the disclosure threshold.
For example, the updated ingredient list may read:
Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Oenothera Biennis (Evening Primrose) Oil, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Tocopherol, Parfum (Fragrance), Benzyl Benzoate, Coumarin.
For people with known fragrance allergies or skin sensitivities, having these ingredients listed individually makes it much easier to identify products that are suitable for them.
Why this matters to retailers
Retailers are often the first people customers turn to with ingredient questions.
These updated labels make those conversations easier by providing more detailed ingredient information and helping customers make informed choices. The changes also bring Canadian cosmetic regulations closer to international standards, creating greater consistency across the beauty industry.
Why this matters to customers
At Glow Jar Beauty, we’ve always believed that transparency builds trust.
These updated regulations aren’t about changing formulations, they’re about giving consumers more information, which we support wholeheartedly. Whether you have sensitive skin, a known fragrance allergy, or you’re simply interested in understanding what’s in your skincare, more transparency helps everyone make informed decisions.
We welcome these changes as a Canadian beauty brand because they support something we’ve believed from the beginning: educated customers make confident & informed skincare decisions.
