We’ve all been there. One minute you’re just enjoying your day and minding your own business, when suddenly you realize you’ve got company. On your face.
Zits, pimples, blemishes, and breakouts are no one’s friend. Unfortunately, they happen to the best of us as a result of pores that have become irritated or infected by bacteria, dirt, or excess oil (and sometimes all of the above.) From touching your face, to using incorrect products, wearing face coverings, or improper cleansing, and over exfoliating, many things can contribute to the formation of pimples.
However, if you’ve ever tried treating you're blemishes with aggressive products or DIY extractions, you know that these methods don’t work all that well. So what does work?
We have a few suggestions:
How to support your skin when you have a pimple:
Tip #1: No touching! - Of course, when you have a pimple your first instinct might be to pick or pop it, but in fact, this can actually make the problem worse by spreading more bacteria and potentially causing permanent damage to the skin. As tempting as it may be, your best bet is to avoid touching the area as much as possible. You might even consider applying a cold tool such as a chilled roller or even just a cube of ice to minimize redness and inflammation and stay hands-off.
Tip #2: Look for ingredients that promote recovery - For getting your skin on the road to repair, you’ll want to opt for formulas that are gentle, hydrating, and nourishing, in order to help your skin to do its job and heal up faster. A few of our favourites include green tea extract for infusing antioxidants, Aloe vera for soothing and hydrating without clogging pores, Vitamin B or Niacinamide for reducing redness, Rhassoul clay for removing impurities, and geranium for balancing oil production.
Tip #3: Keep your routine simple and minimal - Because acne can often result from using too many products, not enough products, or just the wrong products altogether, another tip we love for troubleshooting is to simplify your routine to just the basics until your skin heals (CLEANSE>MIST>MOISTURIZE). Not only will this prevent unnecessary stress to the skin, but it will also help you determine more quickly what is and isn’t working. A gentle cleanser, hydrating toner, and moisturizer might be all you need to reboot your complexion and prevent a full-on outbreak from occurring.
