Focus On Facial Oils: Are They Key to Brighter Skin?

 Facial Oils for Brighter Skin

Bright looking skin is easily your best beauty enhancer. Fresh, radiant skin that seems to just glow looks appealing on everyone at every age, regardless of skin type. We all know to keep our skin looking bright and healthy, use of products that meet our skin’s unique needs is essential. But, newer skincare products, such as facial oils, are continuously finding space in the beauty aisle and determining which may be right for your skin is not always easy.

In this article, we’re demystifying a newcomer of the beauty aisle, facial oils. We’re sharing how these beauty-boosters can help you achieve brighter and healthier looking skin.

What are Facial Oils?

Facial oils are plant-based beauty products designed to nourish delicate facial skin tissue. They help your skin retain moisture in the outermost layers of your skin, known as the epidermis. They assist in balancing your skin’s natural oil levels. They are often used in moisturizing lotions as a topical emollient.

Examples of oils that are suitable for facial skin include:

  • Squalane oil
  • Majacula oil
  • Jojoba oil
  • Avocado oil
  • Rosehip oil - my personal fav!!

Brief History of Facial Oil

Facial oils have gained a lot of attention in the beauty industry recently; however, use of plant-based oils as a skin care product is not new. Vegetable and plant oils have been used for millennia for beauty and skincare. For example, olive oil and sesame oil are known to have been used by Queen Cleopatra for her skin care routine. And, black seed oil has been a household beauty staple in the Middle East for centuries.

How Do I Know If My Skin Care Routine Needs a Facial Oil?

Most adult skin needs support and care to keep moisture levels healthy and oil levels balanced. While facial oil alone likely isn’t going to solve your skin care issues, when used as part of a thorough skin hygiene routine, these oils can make a dramatic difference in the look and feel of your skin.

However, some skin requires use of a regular facial oil more than others. Top signs that your skin care routine needs facial oil include:

  • Dry skin
  • Flaky skin
  • Skin that appears oily
  • Irritated skin with red patches

Before trying the first facial oil you find, remember this: not every facial oil is right for all skin types. Some oils are better suited to treat only dry skin,  or combination skin, and even sensitive skin. Be sure to select only products right for your skin type.

What are the Benefits of Using Facial Oils?

When you first use facial oil you may start to notice that your skin feels smoother, softer, and even a bit more supple. This is because your new skincare supplement is actually nourishing your skin which helps it to function better. And, when skin is able to function properly, it naturally develops a brighter and more radiant appearance.

While we know facial oil helps your skin look and feel better, it can also provide other benefits that your eyes may not readily notice.

Facial Oil Benefit #1: Hydration

Facial oil is superb for sealing in moisture and hydrating lipids to skin tissue. It locks in moisture to help you maintain healthy skin. Well-hydrated skin becomes the clear, glowing skin that many of us seek from our skincare program.

Facial Oil Benefit #2: Reduce Inflammation

Skin can become inflamed easily. Allergens, environmental factors, weather conditions, and sun-exposure can produce signs of inflammation in our skin. Common signs of inflamed skin can include redness, sensitive skin, skin that feels tight, and itchy skin.

Facial oils containing plant-based oils often contain ingredients with natural healing abilities. These properties can be anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and even anti-viral. Naturally sourced oils can help to reduce redness, soothe inflamed skin, and alleviate several uncomfortable symptoms.

Facial Oil Benefit #3: Vibrant Skin

The oil’s ability to prevent moisture loss from skin tissue helps to soften and smooth developing lines in your skin.

However, facial oil shouldn’t be relied upon to prevent the damaging effects that exposure to sunlight has on your skin. The best way to slow signs of aging is by protecting your skin with a mineral SPF.

Facial Oil Benefit #4: Strengthen Skin Tissue

Face oils can strengthen the outer layer of your skin. They do this by softening the epidermis which helps to seal in moisture. Healthy moisture levels in your skin allow the delicate tissue to strengthen.

How Should I Choose a Facial Oil?

Selecting the right facial oil requires understanding your skin’s needs and also knowing what your skin care goals are. A skin care wellness program is an effective way to learn about your skin and establish a skin care program that works for you.

Use your skin type to guide your selection of an oil treatment suited to your skin care program. For dry skin, use products that contain squalane/squalene oil, rosehip oil, and are free from water.

If facial oil is appropriate for combination skin, try ones that won’t clog pores and have antibacterial properties, such as ones with tea tree oil or aloe vera.

Facial oils for sensitive skin should have anti-inflammatory properties such as those found in squalene/squalane oil, jojoba oil, or extra virgin avocado oil.

How To Use Facial Oil

Facial oil should be used midway through your morning and evening skincare routine. Apply the oil after gently cleansing your face but before your last moisturizing step. If you use a toner after cleansing, use the facial oil after the toning solution.

Applying an oil treatment to your face is easy and should feel wonderful. You can use this daily moment to take a deep breath and relax while you nourish your skin. To apply the oil, add a dropper full of product to the palms of your hands. Then, gently massage it into your face using circular motions, making sure to avoid contact with your eyes.

Add Facial Oils to Your Skin Care Routine

Daily use of a facial oil suitable to your needs will help skin feel softer, supple, and look radiant within days of adding it to your skincare routine. Using one that complements your skincare regime will help develop brighter looking skin you’ll love to show off!
