How are Vegan and Cruelty-Free skincare different?

How are Vegan and Cruelty-Free skincare different?

Skincare 101: Vegan and Cruelty-Free Skincare

Over the last few years, there has been a growing demand for more ethical skincare, this is a great news. As consumers become more mindful and conscious of their choices, some brands have worked towards minimizing or even completely eliminating unethical practices from their business models to reduce their negative impact on the planet. From fairer wages to ethical sourcing of ingredients, there has been a positive shift in the skincare industry. As exciting as it is, it can also be easy to feel lost in a sea of skincare marketing/claims. We’re here to help you out with a quick crash course.

→ What is Vegan Skincare?

A Vegan product is one that does not include any animal products or byproducts as a part of its ingredients. The use of animal byproducts in skincare is more common than you may realize. Some common examples are beeswax, lanolin, keratin, collagen and even honey. Carmine, a colorant, is another commonly used animal derived ingredient. The list is endless! Vegan Skincare products will more commonly include ingredients like Shea butter, Aloe, Green Tea etc. In essence, no matter how ethically sourced the ingredient could be, Vegan skincare steers away from any animal products.

For example, our Grapefruit Body Scrub is 100% Vegan and is formulated with the goodness of plant-based ingredients like Aloe, Glycerin, among many more.

→ So...what is Cruelty-Free Skincare?

You might be wondering what cruelty-free skincare is and how different it is from vegan skincare. Cruelty-free skincare essentially means that the product or its ingredients were not tested on animals by manufacturers or any other party involved in the production process. It is important to note that while some products or brands may be cruelty-free, they still supply to countries that mandate animal testing.

If you are in search of some high quality, cruelty-free skincare products, you’ve come to the right place. All Glow Jar Beauty’s products are Cruelty Free like our Dewy Moisture Mist, Luminous Facial Oil, and Restoring Exfoliating Mask and can be enjoyed 100% guilt-free.

→ How are Vegan and Cruelty-Free skincare different?

A product that is Vegan, i.e completely plant based, may still be tested on animals and hence not be cruelty-free. On the other hand, some brands may have cruelty-free products that are made with animal ingredients and hence are not vegan. While the two terms are not regulated, one can keep an eye out for PETA and Leaping Bunny certifications to look for Vegan and Cruelty-free products.

→ Why are Vegan and Cruelty-Free Skincare important?

While there is no one right answer to this loaded question, we can help summarize why there is a bigger need to make changes in the skincare industry. Thousands of animals are subjected to unimaginable experiments in the name of beauty every year.

Here are some steps to take if you want to shop Cruelty Free:

- Reach out to your favourite brands to see if they are CF. Also, ask if the brand sells their products in China where animal testing is required.

- Head to the Animal Alliance of Canada to sign their petition to end animal testing in cosmetics.

- Spread awareness, and check out sites like Leaping Bunny and PETA.

Glow Jar Beauty is Leaping Bunny Certified, and we are constantly working on our formulations to ensure that we can cater to the needs of our community and the planet. Tested only on humans : )
